“We have two hemispheres so our brain can produce two different views of reality.” – Dr Iain McGilchrist
Since the last newsletter, there have been some changes to Channel McGilchrist. It is now the official website for Dr Iain McGilchrist, after having merged the content from the original website, www.iainmcgilchrist.com. As a result, there is new content on Channel McGilchrist which this newsletter will serve to highlight. We are also excited to announce that Dr McGilchrist and Dr Jordan Peterson had a discussion for Dr Peterson’s podcast which is due to be released at the end of May, and we also have a clip from Dr McGilchrist’s discussion with Dr John Cutting.
Whether you are new to Channel McGilchrist or whether you have been a subscriber to the newsletter from when we launched last year, we thought it might be helpful to give you a brief guided tour of the site, since there have been some recent changes.
The new ‘About’ page brings together the content on Dr McGilchrist’s original website, which includes his biography, responses to The Master and His Emissary, as well as information about Channel McGilchrist.
In the Shop you will find links to Channel McGilchrist membership, books and audiobooks for purchase, as well as an exclusive two part lecture recorded for Channel McGilchrist from the member’s area. These illustrated lectures entitled “An Introduction to the Hemispheres” are, like the book, in two parts, and were recorded from Dr McGilchrist’s home on the Isle of Skye. They provide a fascinating and concise overview of The Master and His Emissary and are not available anywhere else. There is also a lecture with The Weekend University which is only available to members of the TWU and via Channel McGilchrist entitled The Brain & Culture: A Symbiotic Relationship. These lectures are also included as part of the membership in Channel McGilchrist.
You will find previous editions of the newsletter under ‘News‘ and the new Free Videos page brings together some of Dr McGilchrist’s most watched and celebrated YouTube videos and discussions, so we hope you will enjoy browsing the selection here.
Under Free Articles there are a number of written pieces by others separated into contemporary articles and historical articles. New under contemporary articles is Dr Daniel Klein’s piece on Think Spiral: The Divided Brain and Classical Liberalism which you can read here.
Dr Iain McGilchrist in conversation with Dr Jordan Peterson, May 2021
Since Dr McGilchrist and Dr Jordan Peterson first sat down for a brief talk a couple of years ago, which was entitled ‘As deep a question as you can possibly ask‘, both agreed they had more to discuss than the time that was allocated. Their busy schedules and Dr Peterson’s subsequent period of illness has meant that this long- awaited conversation was a while in the planning. But the conversation did finally take place earlier this year and will be released via Dr Peterson’s podcast towards the end of May – we will let you know the exact date nearer the time and will be delighted to share it.
Dr McGilchrist credits Dr John Cutting as “…probably the person alive to whom I owe most intellectually speaking.” It was Dr Cutting’s book, Principles of Psychopathology: Two Worlds – Two Minds – Two Hemispheres, and a chance meeting that first sparked Dr McGilchrist’s interest in the differences between the two brain hemispheres. This fascinating conversation is available in the member’s area of Channel McGilchrist where both discuss their shared history and areas of research, and explore John’s specialism of schizophrenia. A clip is available on YouTube which you can watch below.
