Resurgence Talk: Dr Iain McGilchrist, ‘The Value of Values’
Thursday 30th March 2023, 7.30 – 9.00 pm online, via Zoom
Event description.
Values cannot be directly observed or measured, and yet are so powerful that they govern the nature and course of individual lives, as well as the nature and course of a civilisation. What are they, where do they come from, and to what extent are they our own invention? And does it matter?
Dr Iain McGilchrist is a psychiatrist, neuroscience researcher and philosopher. He is committed to the idea that the mind and brain can be understood only by seeing them in the broadest possible context, that of the whole of our physical and spiritual existence, and of the wider human culture in which they arise – the culture which helps to mould, and in turn is moulded by, our minds and brains.
He is a former Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, and a former research Fellow in Neuroimaging at Johns Hopkins University Medical School. He has published articles on literature, philosophy and psychiatry, and written many books, including The Master and his Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World. He now lives on the Isle of Skye, off the coast of North West Scotland where he continues to write, and lectures worldwide.
