Oxford Renaissance: Dr. Iain McGilchrist

Tuesday, 6th February 2024, 17.00 – 18.00 (in person event)

Event description.

We are excited to be hosting our first Oxford Renaissance event with Dr. Iain McGilchrist. The event will take place this Tuesday 6th February at 5PM in Dorfman Room, St Peter’s college.

Dr. Iain McGilchrist is a philosopher, neuroscience researcher, psychiatrist and literary scholar. Three times elected All Souls Fellow, he is best known for his book The Master and his Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World (Yale 2009), in which he explores differences between the brain’s right and left hemispheres and their effects on society, history and culture. He argues that, despite its inferior grasp of reality, the left hemisphere is increasingly taking precedence in the modern world, with potentially disastrous consequences.

Join us this Tuesday for an intense discussion on Dr. McGilchrist’s Hemisphere Theory, how it relates to the origins of Music and Language, how it casts new light on the History of Western Philosophy, and how we may rectify the balance between the left and right hemisphere in our own brains.
